Cossak riders from Kazakhstan help to mark the 250th anniversary of circus in Willesden this weekend
Cossak riders from Kazakhstan will help to mark the 250th anniversary of circus as their tour arrives in Gladstone Park this weekend.
Back in 1768, English cavalryman-turned-showman Philip Astley first drew out a circular arena in an open field near modern day Waterloo Station and thrilled Georgian audiences by selling a single ticket to an array of equestrian and acrobatic acts.
Now Zippos Circus is proud to be part of the UK-wide celebration of 250 years of the circus by touring a new production entitled Legacy.
Highlights of the show include The Khadikov Riders, who recreate a rarely-seen feat from circus’s early days, the Courier of St Petersburg, with a single rider mounted astride a whole team of horses.
But the Big Top show, which runs in Gladstone Park, Willesden, NW2 until Tuesday May 22, also includes comedy with Totti the clown, a dare-devil upside-down roof walk, a real Space Rocket, Cuban acrobats, hand-balancing, a fearless Brazilian aerialist and of course veteran Ringmaster Norman Barrett MBE with his budgie buddies.
