Mother's anguish as Harlesden flat covered in mould for a year

Aisha Hussain, 31, first spotted the mould in her living room and on her children’s bedroom walls in the Harlesden flat in November 2021.

The mum-of-three says her eldest child, Justin, 16, is asthmatic and the thick black mould that's formed on the living room and bedroom walls has made his condition worse.

She said her son had to be prescribed steroids and used an asthma mask to help him breathe.

After publicly voicing her complaints in November this year, a month has passed and she is still forced to live in the same conditions.

She said that the freezing temperatures seen in mid-December, that led to days of snow and hardened ice, worsened the damp and mould, and that her kids were “getting extremely sick”.

It is getting to the point where she is “slowly giving up”.

Ms Hussain said: "It is stressing me out. I have been to the doctor with high blood pressure and my heart has been out of rhythm because of stress.

"I've heard of a little boy aged two die of this and my baby is two. This mould is at the end of his bed and at the side of the bed where he sleeps.”

Her fears for her son were ignited after a coroner ruled that two-year-old Awaab Ishak died in 2020 after prolonged exposure to mould in Rochdale.

The stay-at-home mum said: "I ring the council every day for help, but nobody seems to be there to help me.

"I have put in a disrepair claim for condensation and I have lost furniture and clothes due to the stains from the mould."

Things had got so bad, that she was admitted to Northwick Park hospital with breathing problems and heart palpitations.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help cover costs of the damaged clothes and blankets from the mould.

A Brent Council spokesperson said that the council has offered “temporary accommodation” and served a notice to the landlord to address the safety concerns.

They added: “The welfare of the family is our upmost priority so we will continue to look for temporary accommodation that meets the family's needs and work with the landlord to see that any safety concerns are resolved urgently."
