Herts/Middlesex One: Hendon 8 Wasps Amateurs 6

A last-gasp penalty from Cian Hynes saw Hendon claim a thrilling 8-6 win at home to Wasps in Herts/Middlesex One.

For the hosts, it was the closest match so far in the season, which was hard fought to the end with excellent defence from both teams.

It was Wasps who took the lead as they mustered several attacking moves down the slope, but Hendon held their defensive lines with Tom Mathius and Toby Ikwueke tackling hard.

However, a mistimed tackle gave the visitors a penalty that was duly slotted over and Wasps were 3-0 ahead midway through the first period.

For the next 10 minutes, it was all Hendon as the forwards delivered, with the front row of Paul Julian, Gabriel Murilo and Nick Andrews controlling the scrums.

After being stopped short of the line, a reformed maul saw TJ O’Sullivan break free five metres out and slip through out wide to score Hendon’s first points.

Though unconverted, O’Sullivan’s try was enough to see the hosts lead 5-3 at the break.

In the second half, Wasps regained the lead after 10 minutes as Hendon were caught offside, with the visitors converting the penalty.

Again, fine defence from Stuart Doran and Mike Culhane stopped Wasps from further scores as the hosts then attacked to secure a win.

When all seemed lost, a Hendon attack some 40 metres out resulted in Wasps being penalised.

Hynes took on the responsibility with the late penalty, which bisected the posts for a Hendon win.

The success allowed the hosts to move four points clear of the drop zone at the foot of the table.

Hendon are away this Saturday against Bank of England in their next encounter in Herts/Middlesex One.

When the sides met earlier in the season, Hendon found themselves on the wrong end of a 28-22 score at home.

On the road to Bank of England this weekend, Hendon will hope to gain an element of revenge by collecting another important win in the league.
