Hendon took a massive step in their battle to avoid the drop from Herts Middlesex One with a 38-15 bonus-point success over Old Actonians.

It was their first win since mid-January and lifts them to seventh in the table, eight points clear of the drop with just three games to go.

Hendon played uphill on the Copthall slope in the first period and opened the scoring on eight minutes after the forwards set up the backs for a move finished off by Dave Francis.

Captain Cian Hynes converted and, with Cosy Mutuma and Donal O’Sullivan leading the onslaught in the Hendon pack, he added a penalty for a 10-0 lead.

However, the last 10 minutes saw Acton stung into action and despite strong defence, with Toby Ikwueke prominent, two unconverted tries brought parity again at the half-time whistle.

But the second period saw the home outfit turn up the pressure from the start.

The forwards drove a maul into the corner for Mutuma to score and two more from Francis not only completed his hat-trick but brought with it the bonus point.

Hynes converted all three and he would do the same for Hendon’s final try, which was the try of the match.

Jamie Connolly took the ball outside the Acton 22 and dummied four defenders to score an unbelievable try under the post.

As Hendon relaxed the visitors ran in a consolation try on the final whistle but the match was well and truly won by then.

Hendon’s next league encounter is at Royston on March 25 before finishing the season with a home game against Old Streetonians and an away trip to UCSOB.
