Former Dale Youth ABC boxer John O’Donnell has added the vacant English Welterweight title to his Southern Area crown after winning a split decision against Erick Ochieng.

The 31-year-old southpaw from Shepherd’s Bush used his height and reach to good effect to claim a 32nd win in 34 fights.

Ochieng, who comes from Stoke Newington, had most success when he cut the distance between them but it was not enough to convince all the judges.

Lee Cook scored the 10-round fight 97-93 and Robert Williams had it at 96-94 to O’Donnell but Marcus McDonnell had it as 96-94 to Ochieng.

Also on the bill at the York Hall on Saturday night was Harrow Weald’s Jez Smith.

The 23-year-old welterweight kept his undefeated record intact in his ninth outing as a professional with a comfortable points success over Stanislav Nenkov.

His record now stands at eight wins and one draw.
