REFEREE Andy Hall returned to haunt Rangers - but even he couldn't prevent Jim Magilton's men storming to the verge of the play-off places.

Having sent off three Rs players in two previous matches, Hall was true to form again on Tuesday, dismissing Ben Watson for taking a free-kick too quickly.

But Rangers responded to the loss by taking an immediate lead, before cantering to their second convincing victory in three days and moving within two points of the play-off spots.

Any air of despondency following Watson's dismissal was blown away when Akos Buzsaky re-took the free-kick and whipped the ball past Adam Federici.

The 10 men doubled their lead eight minutes later, Wayne Routledge breaking on the right and crossing to the far post for Jay Simpson to volley home.

There was a scare for the Rs just before half-time when Simon Church's free-kick curled past Radek Cerny and hit the post.

But Reading's hopes of a recovery were dealt a severe blow when Ivar Ingimarsson was shown his second yellow card for chopping down Simpson.

The Royals did carve out a few chances, but QPR substitute Rowan Vine inflicted further punishment 19 minutes from time as he cut inside and beat Federici at his near post.

And, not to be outdone, Patrick Agyemang also grabbed his first goal of the season, racing onto Gavin Mahon's through ball, rounding Federici and slotting home.

Reading pulled back a consolation four minutes from time through Brian Howard, but neither he - nor the referee - could ruin Rangers' night.
