Hendon manager Gary McCann says the club were left with no option but to part company with defender Michael Duberry – less than three weeks after he signed.

Former Chelsea and Leeds United centre-back Duberry spent pre-season with the Ryman League Premier Division side, and signed shortly before their opening-day win over Thamesmead Town on August 10.

The 37-year-old ex-England Under-21 international played a part in each of Hendon’s first four games, against Thamesmead, Dulwich Hamlet, Maidstone and Leiston.

However, McCann revealed that he was unhappy with the dynamic Duberry brought to the side, and felt compelled to act.

“He had been in for the first four games, and I looked at the dynamic of the group. The three centre-halves I have are all very good and I just felt it wasn’t right,” said McCann. “I didn’t think it was right for the squad.

“There were one or two elements that had become a concern for me. He had made it quite apparent that it wasn’t his level and that was in my thinking.

“I had to ask whether he was here for the long-term and if he was going to unsettle the group going forward. I want players who will fight, and I didn’t feel he was in the group.

“I wouldn’t say he agreed with me, but it was my decision and I had to act. I wished him all the best for the future.”
