Charlton transfer news: Striker returns to the Valley

Charlton Athletic manager Chris Powell has ended the speculation over the future of Paul Hayes by recalling the in-form frontman from his loan at Wycombe Wanderers.

The striker has struck six goals in as many games for the Chairboys, including two in their 3-1 victory at Exeter City on Tuesday evening.

Along with defender Gary Doherty, he signed on loan in Buckinghamshire until the end of the season, but the Addicks activated a clause which allowed them to bring the player back to The Valley after 28 days.

Doherty has not been recalled from his loan and will remain at Adams Park. The 32-year-old has impressed boss Gary Waddock and featured in every match of his loan spell so far.

Hayes, a summer recruit from Preston North End, started the opening 11 League One games of the season, but was eventually replaced in the starting line-up by the impressive Yann Kermorgant.

The 28-year-old had limited opportunities to play for the first team as the Frenchman grew in stature, while Powell regards Bradley Wright-Phillips as the most natural goalscorer at his disposal.

Following the surprise decision to allow Leon Clarke to join Crawley Town on loan, combined with a hamstring injury which will sideline Danny Haynes for a further three weeks, supporters had been calling for Hayes’ return.

Powell was elusive about the subject when questioned after the victory against Yeovil Town on Tuesday evening but, promisingly for Hayes, indicated he would only recall him if he felt he had a significant part to play in the end-of-season fixtures.

"It was always the thought process of mine to let him get some games and get him up to speed and then have the ability to call him back," Powell said.

"I'm pleased for him because he was itching to be involved, but the team was playing well.

"It would be wrong of me to call him back if he's not going to be in the 16. It has to be that he will be in the starting XI or 16 as it wouldn't benefit him or Wycombe."

Having snapped up Dany N’Guessan and Lee Cook on loan until the end of the season earlier in the week, Powell did not make any further signings before yesterday’s loan deadline.
