England’s Hollie Pearne-Webb felt they were deserving winners against Ireland in the Vitality Women’s Hockey World Cup at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre on Sunday.

A late penalty corner goal from Giselle Ansley, with just over seven minutes remaining, sealed a 1-0 win in front of a packed crowd to ensure second place in their groop.

And having drawn with India and the United States in their first two fixtures, England will now meet Korea in a crossover match on Tuesday for the right to play in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Rio Olympic gold medalist Pearne-Webb said: “We dominated the game, we went out there and played our game and created a lot of chances and they really didn’t have any chances at all.

“I think performance-wise we can be pleased with that but there are sdtill things we want to look at and improve on for the next match in terms of capitalising on the chances we create and getting more out of them.

“Ireland played other teams who conceded goals against them and we literally didn’t give them a sniff, so we can look at the positives, take them through to the next game and try and improve on converting our chances.”

The Irish had beaten the USA and India to clinch top spot and automatich quarter-final spot with a game to spare and England’s Anna Toman paid tribute to their goalkeeper for a string of fine saves.

She said “Ayeisha McFerran had a brilliant game, but we stuck to it and got the goal in the end.

“It’s really exciting as a defender to be able to contribute up front. It’s a fantastic attribute of this team that we’re fast and attacking, so we create chances and hopefully we can convert a few more.

“We’re really happy with the performance and hopefully we can take that through to our next game against Korea. We played them in the World League, so we know a little bit about them.

“We’ll go away and look at the videos and focus on the next match.”

England play Korea at 8.15pm on Tuesday, with the winners facing the world number one Netherlands, who won their three group games against China, Korea and Italy by a combined 26-2 margin, on Thursday (6pm).
