Brent have won their first scoring sport at the London Youth Games since England star Raheem Sterling captained the football team to gold in 2009.

The borough team clinched the male handball title at the Copper Box Arena – which hosted the 2012 Olympic championships – to become junior champions of London.

Brent’s team of secondary school-aged boys won four of their five group matches – only losing out to Ealing in a narrow 3-2 defeat – to clinch their place in the knockout stages.

They beat City of London 7-3 in the last 16 before overcoming Sutton 7-4 in the quarter-finals and triumphing 7-4 over Islington in the semi-finals.

That set up a final showdown with Bromley in the gold medal match, and Brent earned a 5-3 victory to win the title.

Brent team manager Nicola Addison was ecstatic after her side’s success, saying: “These boys have worked so hard to get to this stage and I think it’s a well-deserved win.

“Well done to all the other teams that played but I feel – and they feel – wonderful.”

The handball victory followed Brent’s silver medal success in the Paralympic sport of boccia earlier in the tournament.

Handball is one of 31 sports in the 2015 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, and a record 126,897 young Londoners took part in last year’s games, taking the event to over one million participants since it first launched in 1977.
