Emerging midfielder Frankie Sutherland is happy to go out on loan this season, if it helps him achieve his dream of playing for the QPR first team.

Sutherland, from Ruislip, has supported QPR since he was nine years old and joined the club two years later, working his way through the youth system.

A Republic of Ireland Under-17, 19 and 21 international, he finally featured for the Rs first team in their recent pre-season friendly against Udinese in Austria – scoring within minutes of coming on.

Sutherland said his first QPR goal was a special moment, but he believes he must still bide his time if he is to secure a regular spot in midfield.

“Pre-season has been good for me, it was great to go out to Austria and get some game time, and now I want to build on that as much as possible,” said the 19-year-old central midfielder.

“If I have to go on loan in order to get some experience then I’m happy to do that.

“It was brilliant to even be a part of things against Udinese, and I think I had only been on the pitch about three minutes when I scored.

“I’ve been at the club for so long, since I was 11, and before that I was going to games when I was nine or 10. It’s my local club so it’s great to be a part of things.”

Sutherland added that QPR’s trip to Austria, which brought a win over Besiktas as well as the 2-1 defeat to Udinese, was a chance to learn from some of the club’s seasoned performers.

The likes of Shaun Derry and Clint Hill have all passed on words of advice for the youngster, and he believes such wisdom is invaluable.

“There’s so much you can take from the players here. The likes of Adel (Taarabt) are so skilful, but it’s also great to see the older players like Shaun Derry contribute so much in training.

“I think they have more energy than everyone else put together! It’s unbelievable to see. As a young player I don’t think I would be allowed to step out of line!”

And Sutherland believes that his goal against Udinese proves that he is capable of weighing in with plenty more strikes from midfield.

“As a central midfielder you have to have a good all-round game, but I see myself as someone who can contribute goals from midfield,” he said.

“Obviously there has been so much going on at QPR, so many new players and different managers, it can be hard for young players, but I just want to keep fit and contribute all I can.

“But my aim is to be a QPR player, and if I have to go out on loan again in order to achieve that, then that’s what I will do.”
