An elderly pedestrian has been left fighting for his life following a crash in Wembley this morning.

The man, who has not been named, is believed to have sustained serious head injuries following a collision with a white van outside Brent Town Hall in Forty Lane as he attempted to cross the road at around 11am.

A section of Forty Lane was blocked off as he received treatment before he was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in east London, in a critical condition.

Cars and busses were held up while police officers diverted traffic away from the scene.

Sergeant John Lawrence, safer neighbourhood team member for Wembley north said:

“We do not know how old he is at this time, but he has been taken to hospital looks to be in a bad condition with potentially serious injuries.

“The driver of the van will be helping us with our enquiries.”

The man received first aid treatment on the scene from Safer Transport Police Community Support Officers (PCSO’S) who happened to be on patrol at the time of the incident.

78-year-old Wembley resident Des Keenan, who lives in nearby Rawlings Crescent was trying to do his shopping at the Forty Lane ASDA store at the time of the incident but found his path blocked. He told the Times: “I came down and saw all the police and ambulances before he was air lifted away. It must be pretty serious to get the air ambulance involved.

“But I do think there should be a Zebra crossing built there because so many people use the crossing.

“People always try and cross this road when they come back from Wembley because the bus drops them off directly next to the Town Hall.”

Members of The Traffic Investigation branch were investigating the scene.

Farhat Omar, who works at the car wash in the neighbouring ASDA told the times he witnessed the man being airlifted to hospital.

He said: “I heard people say there had been a crash involving a car or a van and saw lots of people, there was quite a commotion.

“Then I saw the man wrapped in blankets and being taken into the helicopter, it was quite dramatic.”
