Charity fundraisers collected more than £1,700 from rugby league supporters in Wembley Park.

Five volunteers representing the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity travelled up from Hampshire on August 25 and headed straight for Olympic Way.

The team had a successful afternoon, raising £1,701 for the charity from the “very generous Rugby League fans”.

Wembley Stadium was hosting the Rugby League competition where the Warrington Wolves went head to head with Catalans Dragons to lift the Challenge Cup trophy.

Chief Petty Officer Andy Gibbs from HMS Collingwood in Fareham, who led his team of volunteers, said: “The Rugby League final is always a great day in the Wembley Stadium calendar.

“We were very fortunate to be granted a licence to collect for the charity by the Metropolitan Police, Brent Council and Wembley Park.

“The team are looking forward to returning to Wembley in the future to collect for the charity.”
