A community is celebrating that developers who illegally destroyed their pub in Kilburn will rebuild it brick by brick.

The Carlton Tavern in Carlton Vale will have new life breathed into it after developers CLTX agreed to honour an enforcement order to rebuild the pre war pub.

Cllr Tom Crockett, Conservative representative for Maida Vale, discovered the news when he asked Westminster Council if CLTX had put in an application for a judicial review.

He said: “It’s great news. CLTX have new representatives. There was a site visit to discuss sourcing materials for the refurbishment recently so they are certainly giving outward signs of complying. I’m really positive this is going to happen.”

Cllr Rita Begum, his Labour colleague, said: “It’s an amazing victory. All the hard work everyone put in, especially the whole community coming together and supporting this campaign. I’m very pleased with the outcome that the pub will be rebuilt, brick by brick.”

The Israeli based company reduced the pub to rubble in April 2015 weeks after Westminster Council refused its planning application to knock it down and build flats with a basement bar.

CLTX appealed Westminster’s ruling shortly afterwards and appealed the ensuing enforcement order to rebuild the pub, which was first rebuilt in 1922 and due to be listed by Historic England.

In July, a public inquiry ruled CLTX must rebuild the pub within two years, with the enforcement order placed on the land should the developer try to sell it.

John Simmance, member of Friends of Carlton Tavern campaign group, said: “This is a great day for the community. Since April 2015 when CLTX illegal destroyed this beautiful pub, we have campaigned to have it restored and rebuilt. From day one we got everybody involved.”

Maureen Pepper, treasurer of the group, added: “We have fought and restored an important part of our heritage. We couldn’t let them get away with something so horrible.”

Liz Leicester, a local resident, added: “It became a London issue as people are so fed up of property developers laying waste to local communities and making a fortune.” Rob Cope said: “When we started this we were regularly told there was no point, the pub’s gone. Sometimes people power and the united community can make the impossible happen.”

A spokesman for Westminster Council said: “We are in discussion with the developer on what steps must be taken to rebuild the Carlton Tavern.

“We are pleased that the planning inspector made such a clear decision that the Carlton Tavern should be rebuilt brick-by-brick and that positive steps are now being taken by the developer to make this happen.”
