Two Labour councillors in Brent have got married in a wedding which saw guests fly in from all over the world.

Cllr Matt Kelcher 30, and Cllr Mili Patel, 36, who represent Kensal Green and Alperton respectively, tied the knot at a traditional Hare Krishna ceremony on Saturday morning.

Cllr Kelcher told the Times: “We had an absolutely fantastic day with the colour, sparkle and spirituality of a traditional Indian ceremony in the morning, followed by a good old fashioned British knees up in the evening!

“We’ve both got large families and we’re eternally grateful for them for coming out in force for the big day, with some travelling from as far afield as Belfast, Nurenberg, Paris and New Zealand.”

Guest were asked to attend the morning ceremony in traditional Indian outfits which caused a ‘mix-up’ that almost resulted in one of Cllr Kelcher’s relatives turning up dressed as a famous Red Indian woman who was portrayed in a Disney cartoon.

Cllr Kelcher explained: “My family all live in either Sheffield or Belfast and found it hard to get Indian outfits for the morning ceremony.

“After ringing round several Belfast stores one of my Irish aunties did find one which said they did stock Indian outfits so she headed down to the shop to try them out.

“Unfortunately, when she got there it didn’t look like the kind of shop she was expecting and when she asked to see the ‘Indian outfits’ the man in the shop said ‘we’ve got a range of Pocahontas costumes in the back!’

“We certainly don’t have that problem in Brent.”

The couple, who have been dating for seven years, met while working in Westminster and have both been councillors for two years.

Cllr Patel is Brent born and bred and an ex pupil of Furness primary School in Harlesden, and Claremont High School in Kenton.

Cllr Kelcher, who is the chairman of Brent Council’s scrutiny committee, was born in Ireland but grew up in England.

He moved to Brent four years ago.
