Supporters of a Kenton charity are preparing for a 75-mile walking challenge they started on New Year’s Day.

Forty-five walkers for St Luke’s Hospice in Kenton Road are getting ready to hike through the Devon Triangle from April 27- May 1.

The group of St Luke’s Annual Walkers finished the popular 4.5 mile route around the lakes at Rickmansworth on New Year’s Day.

Lucy Patten, a walker from Pinner, said she was inspired by a friend to start walking: “I have done the Annual Long Distance Walk for the hospice for eight years now and I love it. It’s a chance to get fit, make friends, see beautiful parts of the country and most importantly, help the hospice with its vital work.

“My first training walk was eight miles. I didn’t know if I could do eight miles or how long that would be but I managed it, I was very tired, but I did it. The walks are then graded upwards so the next walk was another eight miles, then another ten and so on. By the end of the three months of training I was happily walking 16 to 18 miles – not a thing I thought I could ever do.

She addedd: “The wonderful thing about these walks is that everything is organised for you. This includes the travel, meals, a comfortable place to stay and helpful, friendly organisers to keep you on the right route. You don’t even have to walk the long distances as shorter walks can be done each day.”

Find out more about the annual walking event at an open day at the hospice on February 2.
