Dawn Butler has been promoted to shadow minister for women and equalities, seven months after resigning from the cabinet.

On February 1, Ms Butler, MP for Brent Central, wrote to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to say that she would be stepping down from her role as shadow minister for diverse communities because of Mr Corbyn’s decision to back the government on triggering Brexit.

Ms Butler said that she had ‘campaigned passionately to remain in the EU’ which led to her decision to resign in order to defy the Labour whip and vote against triggering Article 50.

In June this year, Ms Butler was re-appointed to the cabinet as shadow minister for diverse communities.

However, the MP has now taken a new role in the cabinet and made history by becoming the first African-Caribbean woman to take on this particular job title.

She has replaced Sarah Champion, who stepped down in August. Ms Champion received large criticism over an article she had written in the Sun newspaper about sexual grooming.

Ms Butler said: “It’s an honour to accept this new promotion in the shadow cabinet. Throughout my time as an MP, I have always fought to protect the most vulnerable and those who feel voiceless.

“I am determined in this role to challenge policies that disproportionately impact women negatively. I will highlight intersectionality and the injustices that have led so many in this country to feel they are living in an unequal society,” she continued.

Mr Corbyn added: “Dawn is a great champion for women, equality for all and our country’s diverse communities. I look forward to working closely with her to advance our agenda of a truly equal society that works for the many not the few.”

Hampstead and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq also resigned from her job as shadow education minister because of Mr Corbyn’s stance to back the government on Brexit. In a letter to Mr Mr Corbyn, Ms Siddiq said she could not support the triggering of Article 50 and said she could not reconcile herself to the frontbench position.
