Model of the Barcelona star unveiled at Wembley Stadium

On a day of perfect doubles, a waxwork of legendary striker Lionel Messi was unveiled at Wembley Stadium just hours before he scored two late goals to clinch Barcelona a victory in Wednesday night’s Champions League opener.

The Messi figure, in his signature celebratory pose, was positioned by the goal where he kicked the ball to win his club the UEFA Champions League title in 2011 - and on the same evening, the real player’s fancy footwork won Barcelona’s home match against Russian side Spartak Moscow.

Work on the lookalike kicked off four months ago, at a cost of £150,000- and it will go on show at Madame Tussauds alongside Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday (September 24).

Adam Burrage, Wembley Tours Manager, said: ”Here at Wembley we offer the unique chance for fans to follow in the footsteps of their heroes, so we were happy to be the venue for the first reveal of Madame Tussauds’ figure of one of the biggest heroes in the game!”

The Champions League final will return to Wembley this season, on May 25 2013.
