A charity worker from Kensal Rise took to the water raising more than £500 to help Barnardo’s support more children and young people.

John Fisher, who lives in Buchanan Gardens, swam a mile in Hyde Park’s Serpentine last week raising more than £540 for the children’s charity where he runs their money management programme.

It was the first time the 34-year-old has swum in open water and started training four weeks before in the Royal Albert Dock.

He said: “It’s very different in open water, you’re swimming towards a tiny buoy in the distance, you’re not near anything, and the water is cold and murky but it’s more difficult with a big group of people.

“There were 300 of us, some of us doing it for charity and some for fun. I originally signed up for a bit of fun but then realising Barnardo’s was celebrating 150 years this year decided to do it for them. It was good, although I did get cramp three quarters of the way through so had to rest along side one of the safety canoes to stretch my leg out.”

Mr Fisher has worked for the charity for three years, managing a team of volunteers who support hundreds of vulnerable young people by giving advice about all things financial from day-to-day budgeting and different forms of credit, to setting up savings accounts and understanding payslips.

He said: “Many young people find themselves facing the adult world with no-one to give them advice and with little awareness of the dangers of quick credit and the importance of budgeting.

“Last year we reached about 470 young people and families in London through group work and one-to-one support, and I want to help Barnardo’s reach more young people and empower them to make the best life choices.”
