Kensal Green’s political pensioner choir have taken on a new challenge by staging a musical.

Sing Your Life – Speak Your Mind by the Bolder Voices, is taking to the stage at Jackson’s Lane theatre in Archway Road, from October 27 to November 4 at 7.30pm.

Texting their way through the 20s, stressing their way through the 40s, aching their way through the 60s from arthritis to marathons, this original musical show discovers the pleasures, pitfalls and pratfalls of life at every age.

The half-hour long musical, the group’s first, was written by Clair Chapwell, devised by the company of elders and colleagues, and is directed by Bob Karper.

With a grant from the Arts Council the project began in July with a series of workshops at Kenbrook Care Home in Wembley where stories were listened to and songs created from them for the residents.

Ms Chapwell said: “The first part of the project we ended up with six new songs. For the other part of the project we wanted to do something with the elders who were more on their feet.”

However, her positive group of elder voices pointed out that younger people can find the prospect of aging frightening.

Ms Chapwell added: “We did some workshops using different games and exercise to get material and involved a couple of volunteers in their 20’s.

In one game everyone had to agree or disagree with the statement: ‘I’m looking forward to the future.’

“While the elders agreed, talking about their grandchildren or a cruise they were saving for, the 20 year-old said ‘We’re leaving Europe, I don’t have a boyfriend, I work in the arts which pays really badly, what do I have to look forward to?’.

“Life is very long and there are stresses at every stage. It’s an interesting play.”
