Two star pupils at Capital City Academy have joined 2,000 students in England to hitting the top GSCE grades while classmates tested each other to ensure good results.

Jade Khan achieved three grade 9s in English literature, language and maths, putting her success down to a “very close year group who felt more like a family.”

The 16-year-old also bagged 5A*s and a B in her other subjects and will stay on at the academy in Doyle Gardens to study A-levels.

She will study English literature, history, theatre studies and classics with a view to becoming a teacher herself one day.

However she said it hasn’t all been plain sailing: “I had quite a difficult time, especially during my GCSEs, but would say that no matter how hard it seems it is about pushing through because you will get there and can achieve no matter what.”

Her classmate Sonal Bhunida also attained three 9s with 4A*s, an A and a B.

Friends Zubair Sarwar, 16, and Munir Hassan, both received 8’s in English.

Munir, who also got an 8 in maths, an A in Spanish and three Bs in chemistry, geography and physics, said: “I was surprised. With English I did better than I thought. It was tough revising. I used to go to Zubair’s house, pick him up and we’d be in the library at 9.

“The teachers gave us resources and helped us but most of work was us. We tested eachother.”

Alex Thomas, principal, said: “I am delighted that Capital students have produced some fanstastic results and shown that they can meet the raised expectations of the new GCSEs. Having students achieve ‘9’, the highest grade in all three subjects (in which they were available) is absolutely fantastic. These results build on the excellent A-level outcomes received last week: well done to all the staff and students involved.”
