Adam Newton ‘died twice’ after he was attacked outside the Black Lion pub by Gary O’Brien

The mother of man who was stabbed and beaten outside a Kilburn pub has spoken about her family’s ordeal following the jailing of his attacker.

Adam Newton, 27, ‘died twice’ after he was slashed across the face and stomach by Gary O’Brien outside The Black Lion in Kilburn High Road, on August 11 last year.

He had been randomly attacked by the 49-year-old who used a pint glass as a weapon.

Mr Newton’s stomach was slashed open and he almost lost an eye after it was sliced and almost gouged out by O’Brien.

The severity of Mr Newton’s injuries has resulted in him having to endure a catalogue of painful operations and he has been left scarred for life.

On December 6, O’Brien was convicted of assault by beating and unlawful wounding and jailed for three years at Blackfriars crown Court.

Mrs Newton, who has four children and has lived in Kilburn all her life, said the sentence was an insult to the family.

She said: “That man left my son for dead. Adam had to be resuscitated twice at the scene after his heart stopped and all O’Brien gets is three years.

“His sentence is not enough for what he done to my son.”

Following the attack, Mr Newton, a former pupil of Hampstead School, has moved out of London.

Mrs Newton said: “Adam is struggling to cope with what’s happened and fears bumping into O’Brien or his family so he had had to move away.

“I am glad he is behind bars but three years is simply not enough.

“We are the ones who will serve a life sentence as this has completely changed our lives.”
