Callous thieves have stolen a “trusty old ambulance” vital to an animal charity in Kensal Green.

The Suzuki Carry van, belonging to the Mayhew Animal Home in Trenmar Gardens, was stolen from Templewood Avenue in Hampstead on July 8 and has not been found.

The vehicle, one of three belonging to the charity, went missing between 10am and 7.30pm, police said.

The van, clearly labeled with the charity’s logo along its side, was stationary at the address as staff were out getting supplies.

The Mayhew waited a few weeks to see if the police were able to find it, before organising their urgent appeal to buy a new animal ambulance,

The charity has set up a Just Giving page in order to raise the funds as quickly as possible to make transportation take place as an ambulance is urgently needed back on the road.

Mayhew welfare officers rescue hundreds of abandoned, neglected and abused animals every year, respond to animal welfare issues out in the community and provide ongoing support to carers and pet owners in vulnerable situations.

Mayhew CEO, Caroline Yates, said the replacement van they wish to get is larger, safer and will be completely electric which will save the charity money in the future by being more efficient as well as being exempt from paying various road taxes and congestion charges.

She added: “Our Mayhew ambulances have been on the road helping thousands of animals since 1925. They are vital to our work and having one of them stolen is having a huge impact on the number of animals we’re able to rescue. We desperately need to raise enough funds for a replacement, so anything anyone could donate would be very much appreciated.”

A police spokesman confirmed Camden officers are investigating the incident.

There have been no arrests and enquiries continue, he said.
