One killed and another man seriously injured after car ploughed into bus stop

A Kenton driver who ploughed into a bus stop in Kingsbury leaving one man dead and the other seriously injured has been sent to jail.

Vinayagan Ragupathy, 24, of Preston Hill, crashed his blue Honda Accord car into the number 79 stop in Honeypot Lane, on June 8 last year at 8.45am.

Vasile Prelipcean a 42-year-old catering assistant from Colindale, died at the scene and Ghanshyam Vaghji, a bus driver from Edgware, was seriously injured.

The 53-year-old had his leg amputated and continues to receive specialist medical care at home.

Today (Monday) at Harrow Crown Court, Ragupathy was handed down a nine-month sentence after he admitted causing death by careless driving at an earlier hearing.

He was disqualified from driving for three years and must take an extended driving test at the end of that period.

A second count of grievous bodily harm without intent, in relation to Mr Vaghji will lie on file.

Detective Sergeant Cheryl Frost, of the MPS Road Death Investigation Unit, said: “Two families’ lives have been destroyed by Ragupathy’s actions which have resulted in both the death of a man who had recently become a father, and a man to lose his leg.

“I would like to pay tribute to the families of Mr Prelipcean and Mr Vaghji, and I genuinely hope that others will learn from this case, and how careless driving can have such a devastating impact on so many people.”
