The Abbey Community Café, in Belsize Road, will serve healthy meals from September 9 with some ingredients delivered from food waste charity The Felix Project.

Meals will cost £2 for adults and £1 children, with revenue going back into buying other ingredients, equipment and energy costs.

Sinead Parsons, project manager, said: “With 52.3 per cent of local children living in poverty, providing well-balanced and nutritious meals can be a real challenge.”

She added: “The aim is to create a friendly, welcoming space for people to come together and socialise.”

There are also opportunities for work experience in catering, customer service and admin, with forty volunteers recruited so far.

The cafe is open 11am-2pm every Saturday.
