One in 38 homes in Brent are at risk of repossession – the fourth worst borough in England.

According to shocking new figures released by housing charity Shelter, just under 3,000 households in the borough faced evictions in the past year.

Newham has the highest risk of repossession or eviction in the country, closely followed by Barking and Dagenham with as many as 1 in every 35 and one in 36 homes at risk respectively.

The figures also highlight the extent of the capital’s housing crisis, with London boroughs dominating the top 20 according to the charity.

Cllr Margaret McLennan, Brent Councils lead member for housing, told the Times they are working hard to support residents at risk of being evicted.

She added: “We work with Brent Citizens’ Advice Bureau to ensure people can get the advice and information they need, and have stopped repossessions and people losing their homes thanks to our lay advocacy service at Willesden County Court which negotiates with lenders to stop homes being repossessed.

“If you are in that situation, we would urge you to get in touch.”

Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter, said: “Seeing that one home in every hundred is at risk of repossession is a frightening reminder that homelessness can happen to anyone.”
