View from the chamber: Not surprised Brent is the ‘borough of culture’

PUBLISHED: 08:00 09 June 2018

Archant

Recent months have seen Brent’s community spirit continue to grow. As the summer heats up, and more of us are spending time out and about, the borough is brimming with creativity, energy and potential.

From Brent’s rich sporting community to the vibrant histories of generations of immigrants, including the 70th anniversary of the Windrush celebrated in our libraries, people from all walks of life are making Brent a great place to live, work and play.

Moving from spring to summer brings changes and after a busy May, including local elections and the annual council meeting, we have a new cabinet made up of hardworking councillors dedicated to serving Brent.

Everyone deserves the best start in life and young people in Brent are taking centre stage this summer. Between internships for SEND students, shining a spotlight on a young carer and taking a trip through the youth stories of Brent, is it any wonder Brent will be London Borough of Culture 2020?

Not to be missed are the many ways to get active this summer. Those looking for a race in the sun can take part in the annual “Color Run”: the US phenomenon that has made its way across the Atlantic, known globally for its creative use of coloured powder, thrown at participants as they race around Wembley Park.

If the change in temperatures has got you looking for new places to eat, popular cafés such as The Lounge – London’s best restaurant, according to TripAdvisor – and the new Roundwood Park Café may whet your appetite. No matter what your goal this summer, whether it’s fitness or a desire to learn more about your local community, our borough can offer everything.
