An award-winning creator of a short drama set in the St Raphael’s Estate in Neasden has made the shortlist of films to be shown at the British Urban Film Festival.

Samuell Benta, from Sudbury, will showcase Perceptions which was commissioned and funded by Brent Housing Partnership, which runs the estate with the support of Wates Giving, at the event which celebrates the best of urban films across the UK .

The 30-minute film features youths and young adults showcasing their talent in a bid to break free from the stigma attached to people who live in the area.

Mr Benta said: “I am happy that the film will be shown at the festival. Hopefully, it will go some way to changing the way people view council estates.’’

The former Copland Community School student rose to prominence through his groundbreaking comedy web series, All About The McKenzies, which focuses on the life of a black family living in the capital.

The show won the Great Ensemble Cast in Comedy accolade at the LA Web Festival and Best Web Series in the Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts Awards.

The short film will be screened at the Genesis cinema in Whitechapel, east London, tomorrow.
