Crusade launched to resuscitate area
A FOUR point plan to bring a neglected high road back from the dead has been announced.
Ed Fordham, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Hampstead and Kilburn, is calling on shopkeepers, residents and councils to come together to give Kilburn High Road a new lease of life.
Mr Fordham has committed himself to changing the fortunes of the famous road, which has recently been blighted with closed shops and hit with a lack of funding from Brent Council.
Mr Fordham said: "It's an amazing place to live and I believe that it could be so much better. Speaking to hundreds of residents and many of the shopkeepers and traders I have heard ideas that people believe would make a real difference. That's why I am launching this initiative today.
"My plan is a major clean up of Kilburn campaign - led by residents and traders, supported by the two councils and the police."
Mr Fordham is calling for all prostitute and call cards to be removed from phone boxes along the High Road and for those caught putting them up to receive ASBOs.
Estate agent boards on buildings and shop fronts should be banned and a major planting and 'greening' operation done along the whole road to generate a better street environment.
Finally, Mr Fordham said train companies should be held accountable for cleaning rail bridges in Kilburn High Road, Iverson Road, Loveridge Road, Christchurch Avenue and Belsize Road.
Mr Fordham said: "I am very clear that these are priorities for me and for the local Liberal Democrats.
"I believe we will be able to go one stage further and have joint Brent-and-Camden specified plans to place these objectives in writing and set a new 'gold standard' for all of Kilburn.
"The creation of the new parliamentary constituency is a unique chance for all of us and will give Kilburn its own MP for the very first time ever.
"If elected I will use the office of Member of Parliament in a pro-active way to drive this agenda forwards."
